eZaal; malaise du jour

oooooOOOOOOooooooo

I feel hesitant to write something about eZaal, as so much has already been written, with the various online Skorne communities collectively shitting the bed over the reveal of his rules. People got their first glimpse at what Skorne's next warlock can do, and it seemed there was a lot of expectation and anticipation invested in what he could do. I largely stayed out of the conversation as I felt I had nothing alternative to say to what was already being said, and would only add to a process I will illustrate with gifs, as is the way and laws of blogging

First people be like

Then other people be like

and the first people are all

But since the weekend, we are already getting more stories and instances of people actually trying on eZaal and giving him a go, a more accurate picture is beginning to emerge of how he and his abilities can synergise with the stable of Skorne units and beasts. One decent thread was started by one of the Enter the Crucible guys after he used Zaal as one of his lists for the Iron Gauntlet and Masters at Gencon, and to me he brings a nice, concise and easily understood breakdown of his experiences. This brought clarity to a warlock that otherwise looks quite muddled on paper, where people would find problems with using him faster than actually considering what solutions he may have.

For myself, I write this post because I feel I have a way to approach my opinion on Zaal in a variety of domains, as discussing the merit of the warlock himself is dependent on so many factors, its easy to get bogged down in various overlapping arguments. So first, the personal domain, or what my opinion of him is; he intrigues me and  he's disappointed me, he excites me and he makes me want to persist with him. The latter is likely due to being a masochist, I perform modestly with Skorne at best, yet still like the pointy eared pricks. There are also some dialectics at work here: opposing emotional states that meant I did not have a clear idea of what I thought of him, beyond that I want to try him out and see just what would happen with his suite of abilities. I have a genuine curiosity and anticipation of how Transference, Annihilation and Reclaim work alongside the rest of the Skorne faction.

This leads into what I consider the next domain, stepping back and observing where Zaal sits in context of his faction, and in comparison of the other factions in the game. A lot of talk has focused on him not bringing anything different to the Skorne faction, not having the ability to change Skorne's "bad" match ups. Some are making direct comparisons with pZaal, and I think this is a mistake as different versions of a warlock ultimately play a very distinct game from one another. Sure there are themes and similarities, but they only add character and don't seem to define the caster's use on the table.  On the flipside of that, several were looking for something quite different in eZaal, a "control" caster as seen in other factions. But I wonder now if having a caster that has a decisive impact on the game is even part of what Skorne does? It seems to me now that Skorne may have similarities with Trollbloods in that the main strength is in the army itself, with the warlock playing a more subtle support role then just direct buffing and debuffing. So developing a stronger appreciation of the units, beasts and solos may be required of myself, to see just what pocket Zaal sits in comparison with them. There are some great combat solos in Skorne that would benefit from Transference, so that was one of my starting points.

Stepping back again and looking at wargaming as a domain, and where WM/H fits within that context, there were some who were questioning Privateer Press' ability and integrity, in writing rules and communicating with the player base. This was something I snorted at; it really seemed myopic to think that of a company when you can make a direct comparison to the crap that was going on with Age of Sigmar and Games Workshop. Then again, that system and the fans of that company may be able to find some enjoyment and snort in turn at the detractors of AoS. I find it easy to be outside of that process looking in and have contempt for an "inferior" system, but am I also blind to any inherent problems within the WM/H way of doing things? Am I just defending PP out of having invested so much of myself into this game? It's pretty much stating the obvious to say it's all relative then, but I want to be cautious that to boil this down to a discussion of relativity, can shut down further argument. At this stage, I feel PP are an incredibly responsive company, that have a particular design approach in mind that they seem to follow despite the requests of their customers, and I think they are well within their rights to do so. There are creating a fantastic product, with interesting and evocative pieces that generate a lot of discussion - sometimes too much as is probably the case with this post.

What this all boils down to is me having an opinion of Zaal based upon three main factors or domains. There are most certainly more "domains", and further deconstruction may shape my opinion more, but I'd rather put that aside for now because all this writing is making my brain ache.

Also, AoS is terrible. Asshole of Suck more like.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG

I get a child-like glee whenever PP drops reveals.

I guess I should acknowledge this guy too:

Ret caster on a medium base? What a tough guy. Guess its a good thing they spoiled he'd have Martial Discipline on the Primecast; won't trip up on Halbadiers or Mage Hunters.

More relevant to the factions I play is the reveal of the Steelhead Merc, who may find places in Cryx lists if I decided to go down that path. Or heck, even down the Merc path seeing I got the stuff to start in that direction too. Also I was confused looking at the solo with the blue Cygnar armour, thought he was meant for that faction, but now see he's a Thamarite Merc solo rocking about in Cygnar gears.

Cheeky.

EDIT: the Meat Thresher apparently has been revealed too ( ゚ Д゚) WANT

OOPS

'oops' seems to punctuate too many of my games of late, a series of commas and a full-stop delineating the end of a verbose and grammatically fucked sequence of herpa-derp moves.

At least I can have fun while doing it ^_^

Instead of rolling out the Rasheth bus, I ended up using the revised Zaal list mentioned in the previous post. My opponent was Chas Roberts, a man of epic proportions and immense good vibes. He's pretty much the personification of this:
God gave a thumbs up and he named it Chas

He also runs Cygnar, and I didn't fancy my luck chucking a chain-gang list at either pHaley or Sturgis. In reflection, Rasheth would have been fine against the Sturgis list he faced me with, but I still think Zaal was the better choice for either match up. I could be horribly wrong? Maybe beasts and heavy infantry really is the way to go? Bugger.

In any case, he brought a Stormwall, two full units of Forgeguard, pAlexia, Lanyssa Rassum-rassul-something, the Black 13, squire, Rupert, Ragman, and a journeyman.

And we set up on a table with a goddamned water feature in the middle of everything.

First Oops.

Turn one we run shit up, I kind of traffic jam myself a little and pull stupid charging stunts to get an Extoller up far enough to dump souls into Hakaar who I decided would be fine to run up from the AD line before anything else. Oops 2.0. Also charged up Zaal to get Inviolable Resolve out on him, so now my spearheading Character Ancestral Guardian is sitting at Armour 23. other stuff dances around the way, and then the responding Cygnar run up and get Arcane Shield bullshit out etc etc so on and so forth.

Turn two consists of me setting up by trying to swing to my left away from the enemy zone a bit: I figured my deployment was a bit shit, but I had accidentally manufactured a move where I could contest his zone easily, but otherwise forget about the Forgeguard and Black 13 who had set up over there, while I concentrated on my zone and the forces Chas had there which included Sturgis as well. Aha! A feint! Good thing there isn't a large terrain feature that'll slow or complicate my advance! Oh wait.
Lake Sturgeonis

Turn two for Cygnar rolls around and the pain was brought - it was kind of hilarious that the Journeyman had to cap a dwarf to open a gap for Lanyssa to poke her head through to slap Hakaar with a hunter's mark. He goes down to two dwarf swings and out pops Kovass with three souls ready to go. The other dwarves whack-a-mole a few Immortals, and that's pretty much them done. The Stormwall pumps a shot into one of my Ancestral Guardians and rolls frikkin box cars for damage leaving it on one box. I began removing the model before doing the math, but fucking hell...

From there, covering fire templates were placed, and then it was time for Sturgis to go; charging a storm pod I didn't even notice was there (so ninja), Sturgis feated and started pulling my models around. 5 Swordsmen died to being dragged through the covering fire templates, and other stuff was jostled around. Sturgis then whacked the storm pod and put Kovass into the dirt. After teleporting back behind a wall the Black 13th drifted that 4" plate of doom onto a couple more Swordsmen, and the turn was passed over.

My turn three things weren't looking great; both my units were sitting at 50% or below, and I otherwise had my light beasts and solos to try and manufacture something. But things were too spread out and there was still that piece of shit lake in the middle of everything to contend with. OOPS OOPS OOPS. There was the chance to get a Savage into Sturgis though, with only a few dwarves, Ragman and a Squire in my way. Vengeance moves from the Immortals actually dusted more dwarves then they had any right doing, and I then began the process of clearing the lane to deliver my Savage; and Extoller and Zaal tried to shoot him down, but little did I know that Ragman can sac-pawn shots into Warcasters (Sturgis on ARM 21 doesn't mind getting tickled by Extoller zappy rays). Popping feat, one Savage made his way over to bop a few dwarves on the head and clear a lane for the immortals to finish what Zaal and the Extoller started. After committing three immortals to Ragman and another two to the squire, I thought I had enough of a lane to Sturgis.

Here's the big OOPS; there's still a dwarf there with reach that I thought wasn't a problem. It wasn't until halfway through all this that I realised he had to go, after I decided it wasn't necessary to boost a damage roll from the one immortal next to him. I had also blocked myself out of getting to the offending Forgeguard with any of my other units. The Savage was going to have to eat a weapon-master free-strike. Good thing for Chas his dice were on fire tonight and rolled a 20 on four dice, one shotting my Last-Standed Savage under feat. I called it there because it would be a simple matter for his force to mop up what was left, and I would have squat to retaliate with.

For fun I rolled out the attacks from the Savage, and if he had got there Sturgis would be cyclops fodder. Chas also discussed how there was no reason for him to be where he was either, where he could have just teleported back out of the Savage's 11" threat range, and indeed the situation would be the same for me - I guess my beasts could have gone to town on his units and secured me that zone, and in tournament play that's what I probably would do if the assassination opportunity wasn't there.

Still, I walked away from that game feeling happier about the beast load out and the ratio of that against how many units I had. I left that game feeling more confident about how the list plays despite the loss and the confounding terrain. It feels like this list will grind and practically kamikaze itself against the opponent, in order to deliver a fully boosted Savage, Ancestral Guardian, or Kovass into the caster. if that's the case, my beasts and solos need to work in a tighter group, so deployment is going to be the next thing I work on.

And I'll get around to using that Rasheth list some day. oops.

PS: I really want that second unit of Immortals. Stupid POW12 shit killing my stuff grumble grumble

The Basics

To kick this off properly, I'll jabber a bit about some prep I'm doing for a two-day tournament in Wellington in January. Valleycon's Warmachine event asks players to show up with tier lists, for a 7 game, deathclock, steamroller.

Now I'm a Cryx and Skorne player. I've gathered enough minis over the last few years to cobble together a few tier lists, and I told myself 2015 would be my year of Skorne. 2014 was also supposed to be a year of Skorne, but that idea ate shit pretty early on.

But yeah. Skorne. Ooo-rah. A real faction, that local good guy and man you'd introduce to your mother Nikola described as being one of the most honest factions in the game; you buff shit up and send over-powered crap into people. Straight-forward, predictable, and apparently a joy for my opponents to face due to the lack of jank and weird tricks you can pull out of magical invisible butts.

How top-tier WM/H play seems to happen

That didn't inspire a lot of faith in me to podium, as tiers will further restrict any tricks I've been able to concoct to date. Also, Skorne tier lists have been pretty thoroughly worked over and I'd imagine most opponents are at least familiar of their capabilities, if they haven't yet faced them. I'm talking about your Fists of Halaak and Chain Gang stuff.

So, list building and decision time; I've got the models to build a decent Chain Gang list, a so-so Fist of Halaak list (needing to max out all my Cataphract units due to damaged Acuarii, and lacking enough Incindiarii), Zaal's tier, and potentially some other builds that don't really catch my eye (the Makedas and what not). There was a consideration to do pMorghul's tier, but the damaged Acuarii put the kaibosh on that too.

The first list I'm considering seriously is a Zaal one;

Supreme Aptimus Zaal
- Kovaas
- Aptimus Marketh
- Cyclops Raider
- Cyclops Savage
- Cyclops Savage
- Cyclops Brute
Hakaar the Destroyer
Ancestral Guardian
Ancestral Guardian
Extoller Soulward
Extoller Soulward
Extoller Soulward
Full Immortals
Full Praetorian Swordsmen with Officer & Standard

This gets to tier three, so advance deploying Ancestral Guardians and loaded up Aptimus and Extoller crew. I unfortunately lack the models for a second full unit of Immortals to get to tier four, and I am VERY hesitant to run two min units. Starting with Kovass on the table would be pretty neat though. Argh, INDECISION

The previous list I had ran without the Savages and one less Extoller, for a Krea and a unit of the newly released Keltarii. The one game I had against a Mortenebra tier list left me pretty sour with my list losing steam once shit died both to rampaging jacks as well as Last Stand. The infantry just didn't have the punch needed to carry things through. So (perhaps prematurely) I've amended the list to the above to account for this. I'm also interested to see if much happens in the interaction between the Savage's animus and Zaal's feat. Prescience in general seems like a good idea for the list.

But in considering this list I am quickly brought back to feelings of wanting to play Zaal outside of tier - lately I've been running him with double Nihilators and Swamp Shamblers, and have been having a blast with the list. Not winning any games mind you, but enjoying the overall experience brought by Last-Standed Nihilators and a swelling mass of tough'ed Swamp Shamblers.

<3 my rotting fishy fishy

Further rumination leads me to be some what grumpy that I can't use the lists and units I really have been enjoying with Skorne lately; I've been having a blast with Mordikaar, and there's a Rasheth gun line list that I have been tech'ing that also has been a bunch of fun.

However, I'm determined to give this tournament my best showing. I'll continue to play with my tier lists and tinker with them. I will be open to what the experience may bring me when using the lists I am really itching to play.

Tonight I'm keen to try on my Rasheth Chain-Gang list. It looks like fairly typical fare:

Dominar Rasheth
- Bronzeback Titan
- Titan Gladiator
- Titan Sentry
- Basilisk Krea
Agonizer
Agonizer
Paingiver Task Master
Max Gatorman Posse
Max Nihilators
Max Paingiver Beast Handlers
Swamp Gobbers Bellows Crew

I guess the only thing atypical is the Nihilators. Most people seem to want MOAR BEASTS for their chain-gang, but playing this list with a second Gladiator has left me very luke-warm. I kind of want the bodies to create a screen, or present a problem for scenario play. We'll see.
